What is a Tax Amendment?

A tax amendment (Form 1040-X) lets you correct a previously filed federal tax return when you discover changes that affect your liability — additional income, missed deductions, filing-status corrections, or new dependents.

The IRS allows amendments for up to three years from the original filing date or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.

Common Reasons to Amend

Missed Income or FormsA late W-2, 1099, or K-1 arrived after filing.
Overlooked Deductions or CreditsDeductions or credits you didn’t claim originally.
Filing Status ChangeSwitching between single, head of household, married joint, or married separate.
Dependent AdjustmentsAdding or removing dependents you didn’t claim correctly.
Errors in Original ReturnMath errors, transposed numbers, or incorrect entries.
Not sure if you need to amend? Complete the survey and our team will review your situation — there’s no obligation. If the IRS has already sent you a notice, use the IRS Frivolous Return / Amendment Form instead so we can respond within your deadline.
